Water Softener vs Water Filter: What's the Difference?

People use "softener" and "filter" like they are the same machine. They are not.
They solve different problems, and knowing the difference is the fastest way to avoid buying the wrong thing.
What a water softener does
A water softener targets hardness, meaning dissolved calcium and magnesium.
It works by ion exchange: hard minerals are swapped for a small amount of sodium as water passes through a resin bed.
What you notice afterward:
Fewer spots on glassware and less film on dishes
Less scale crusting on faucets, showerheads, and inside the water heater
Soap and shampoo that lather easily
Softer-feeling skin and hair
A softener does not remove chlorine, improve taste much, or take out contaminants like disinfection byproducts or lead. That is not its job.
What a water filter does
"Filter" is a broad term. The two types that matter for most homes:
Carbon filtration reduces chlorine and chloramine, improves taste and smell, and reduces some disinfection byproducts. This is often installed whole-home.
Reverse osmosis (RO) is a fine-membrane system, usually under the kitchen sink, that removes a wide range of dissolved contaminants for drinking and cooking water, including disinfection byproducts and many others.
A filter does not soften water. Run a pure carbon filter on hard water and you will still get scale and spots, because the hardness minerals are still there.

Why North Georgia homes often need both
North Georgia water is moderately hard, so a softener has real work to do on scale and spots.
It is also surface water treated with chlorine, which creates disinfection byproducts that EWG reports above its health guidelines in many local utilities. That is filtration's job, not a softener's.
The two problems are different, so the complete answer for most homes is a softener plus filtration, usually with reverse osmosis at the drinking tap.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a water softener filter the water?
Not in the way people mean. A softener removes hardness minerals but does not remove chlorine, disinfection byproducts, or most other contaminants. For that you need carbon filtration or reverse osmosis.
Can I just use a filter instead of a softener?
A filter will not stop scale and spots, because it does not remove the calcium and magnesium that cause hardness. If hard-water symptoms bother you, you need a softener.
Do I need both a softener and a filter?

Is softened water safe to drink?
